So the story just sucks, and on top of that we are two layers deep into daddy issues. The plot, instead of making the story enjoyable, just sucks. It’s like watching keys being jiggled before a toddler. The voice acting sucks, and no i don’t like the usual voice either and barely heard it. These models with these voices and this plot make it look like Mario Mario and Luigi Mario are 13 years old kids who’s bollocks have prematurely dropped, but only half way there, so they glued-on fake moustaches and pretend to be adults. I don’t know what voice and voice acting can make this 3D model of Mario work, but this performance sure did take me out of the movie many times. When Bowser sings you clearly hear Jack Black, and well the character is about as bad as JB’s acting career. And i somewhat don’t like Peach voice acting either. And her model and animation are very bad. She run right into that uncanny valley, just not fireballs deep, yet.
So Mario’s actions have destroyed half the brooklyn and killed countless people, yet he is a hero? He intentionally sent a nuke on the way to his home.
I prefer licensed music over generic orchestral soundtracks, but i prefer when it’s done properly. A good obscure tune used as a showstopper, with a proper entry and exit, or as a leitmotif. Even a cover band making an interesting version of it. But this picture uses some of the most overused songs and often no more than as a reference. Did you crave to hear 10 seconds of the OST from New Battles Without Honor and Humanity in a Mario film? What exactly Take On Me has in common with cart racing?
There is some rather game-accurate fan-service, which is kinda good. But a half of it is artificial and poorly written into the movie. About as fitting as in the Super Mario Bros. A skilled writer is able to work with what they have. This team didn’t even bother. Well, they didn’t bother with the story or the plot, so of course the details are not good either. Them busting moves from some more advanced acrobatic games instead of from the newer mainline games looks like cheating. That’s rather unsatisfactory.
In the end it’s a tolerable watch, but not a very exciting one.
