風のクロノア door to phantomile (Kaze no Kuronoa)

English text

A 2.5D platformer from before the 2.5D became a descriptive term. It’s a side-scrolling platformer with 3D environments and sprite-based characters. Despite the turns the maps take, they all are purely linear and use additional axis only at scripted points. Thankfully, the dissonance between three-dimensional maps and 2D sprites occurs rarely.

It’s a cool game, with it’s own gimmick, and has really nice designs, but the killer feature is the sound, with its simlish, cartoony barks, and good music.

I finished the game using my no-name gamepad, but when i went to the bonus mission it was near impossible without proper ten-finger layout, even with quick-saves. I played it on ePSXe, if i had to play it on the original hardware i would probably finish the game, but i don’t see myself even wasting time on the bonus mission past the first try.

It so happened, i’ve played the second game once long time ago, so i decided to find its name. I spent several years looking for it occasionally with no result. Probably because i was searching for something containing “luna”. I think I saw that my target was a sequel and decided to start with the first one. Well, PS2 emulation is dead garbage anyway, since PS2 has no games and no one is passionate about it to create something as good as ePSXe or Dolphin Emulator.

Klonoa is one really good game and the sequel AFAIR is good too. But today all the franchise has is a lacklustre-looking re-make for Wii and an online comic. (Which was closed, but thankfully preserved ~2020)
