Command & Conquer: Red Alert – The Aftermath (Retaliation; Remastered)

If you watch the videos of the original release it all is a pretty sad display. Just a collection of mission. But the remastered is based on the Retaliation release, so they’ve re-arranged the missions to tell some kind of a story and they’ve added some new cut-scenes and re-used the generic mission movies. This actually feels like the real campaigns.

Besides the new missions there are finally some new units. Soviets got new amazing tesla tanks. Unroadkillable and strong tesla troopers. A new submarine that finally can attack land targets, pity it is not aggressive and doesn’t attack if it’s not told to. And a stupid suicide tank that doesn’t have enough HP to perform its duty. Allies got the chrono tank that costs an absolute ton, has low HP, universal rockets and can teleport somewhere. They are pretty enjoyable in the campaign on easy, but they are basically useless in skirmish. You can’t even teleport them as a pack, you have to manually send them one by one. Another addition is the mechanic. They can repair tanks for free in the field, but allies rely more on cruisers and choppers than on tanks.

For soviet campaign they’ve hired an actor who lazily attempts terrible russian that doesn’t sound like anything at all. Also soviets never had paper bags or some weird laws about public drinking. While the scene is happening in private. Volkov and Chitzkoi return for a mission and even after being nerfed they are still strong. In general the soviet campaign is more or less Volkov’s story.
One mission gives you access to mammoth, chronosphere and iron curtain at the same time, making them finally useful.

The allies campaign has almost no base-building. There’s less of a feel of a story, the missions are simpler and shorter, but still fun. And this is the first time i’ve encountered a buggy script in the Remastered. In the Negotiations i freed the hostages two times in time, and then they’ve refused to go with me. So i restarted and guarded the dork whom people in walk-throughs usually team-kill. Because of his tardiness one of the hostages was shot, but at least he triggered the stupid script for the game to proceed. Hunting the last peasant on every map is still annoying. I thought this one and the last maps screwed me over again because i couldn’t find the last survivor.

With the new units and with Retaliation saving these disparate missions this is a fun add-on.
